How to Make a Balloon Garland That Looks Professionally Done

If there's one decoration that does the most work for the least money, it's a balloon garland. It fills an empty wall, frames a dessert table, and becomes the backdrop in every photo — no helium, no professional required.

The catch is that a garland can look either polished or lopsided depending on a few small decisions. Here's how to get the polished version every time.

What you'll need

Most of this comes in a single garland kit, which is the easiest place to start — the colours are already chosen to work together. Beyond the kit, you'll want a few things you probably already own:

• A balloon garland kit — balloons in several sizes, a decorating strip, glue dots
• An electric balloon pump (inflating 100+ balloons by mouth is not a good afternoon)
• Command hooks or removable adhesive strips for hanging
• Scissors and a little patience

1Inflate to different sizes on purpose

Don't inflate every balloon to maximum. Vary them: some full, some three-quarters, some small. This variation is what makes the finished garland look full rather than uniform. Tie them off and sort into loose piles by size as you go.

2Build in small clusters

Take four balloons of mixed sizes and tie them together at the necks into a cluster. Thread that cluster onto your decorating strip by pushing the knots through the holes. Keep adding clusters, rotating the direction each one faces so the garland fills out in every direction instead of lying flat.

3Fill the gaps with small balloons

Once the main shape is on the strip, you'll see gaps. This is where the 5-inch balloons earn their place — use glue dots to tuck them into the empty spaces. This step is the difference between “nice” and “how did you do that.” It's also where a metallic or confetti balloon here and there adds contrast.

4Hang it, then shape it

Hang the garland with command hooks, spaced so it drapes in a gentle arc rather than pulling tight. Once it's up, step back and rotate individual balloons to fill any thin spots. A garland is meant to look a little wild — you're not aiming for symmetry.

A few things worth knowing

Latex balloons soften and shrink after about a day, so if the party is in the evening, build the garland that morning rather than the night before. Foil and metallic balloons hold much longer — which is exactly why most kits mix the two.

Decorating outdoors? Keep the garland in shade. Direct sun overheats latex balloons and they'll start popping — not the soundtrack you want for a garden party.

The reason garland kits come in coordinated palettes is that colour does most of the theming for you. Pick the palette to match the occasion and the garland carries the theme on its own — no extra decorating required.
